Are you excited about the Olympics yet?

posted by BOFarrell at 9h10

I don’t know about you, but I am getting very excited about the Olympics. It has been building for months.

I first caught the spirit before the holidays, when the torch relay came through St. Lazare. It was a cold afternoon, but everyone in town, it seemed, including me, was out there to catch a glimpse of the flame. It was inspiring. And very festive.

Then, at Christmas, I decided to share the feeling, and gave just about everyone on my list an Olympic-themed gift. I bought team Canada shirts and about a dozen pairs of red Vancouver 2010 mitts. (Yes, they were very hard to find.)

And now that the Games are just days away, I find myself fascinated by two questions:

First, who will be the last torch bearer who will carry the Olympic flame into the stadium during the opening ceremonies and light the cauldron?

My money is on Wayne Gretzky.

And second, will team Canada beat the Americans or the Russians in the gold-medal game to capture the ultimate hockey bragging rights?

I am dreaming of that perfect Olympic moment. Can you picture it? Sidney Crosby looking upward as the flag is hoisted and the national anthem plays? The whole country will be watching. It will be one of those moments, where, years from now, you will remember where you were when the final buzzer sounded and the celebration erupted on the ice.

Ah, the Olympics. We will be hosting the world. It should be a good time. And I will be a part of it, because starting today, I will be wearing my red mitts.

What are you doing?
