Towns set to celebrate winter

Municipal winter carnivals showcase the fun side to the cold

It’s that time of the year again – when municipalities both off and on the island like to break up the winter doldrums with a bit of fun.

Pointe Claire’s Winter Ice Breaker took place Saturday but there’s still lots to come.

Kirkland’s winter carnival opens today and runs till Saturday with various events, including The Amazing Survivor Factor race, family bingo, family day at the sports complex, a carnival supper, closing ceremonies and announcement of the city’s 2010 youth ambassador.

Hudson’s Shiver Fest begins today and runs till Feb. 7. It includes all the traditional events as well as some new attractions, like a moonlight snowshoe rally by torchlight. Activities include family bingo tonight, a teen party tomorrow, a pancake breakfast and brunch served by councillors dressed up in traditional Quebec fashion on Saturday, as well as a family outdoor snow day and the snowshoe rally by torchlight under the first full moon of 2010. A skating party takes place on Pine Lake on Jan. 31. Other events include coronation of the festival’s king and queen, broomball, winter volleyball, soccer, hockey, skating, relay snowshoe races, giant ski races, parachute games and tug of war with the town’s firefighters as well as ice-fishing and sleigh rides. The Hudson Fire Department Hockey Challenge is Feb. 3. Dinner & Comedy Night with Alex Wood, Jason Laurans and Joey Elias is Feb. 5. The Hudson Legion (Branch 115) holds its annual Mixed Cash Bonspiel on Feb. 6. Register by calling the Hudson Legion at 450-458-4882 or Barb Mason at 450-458-1344. Feb. 7: Quarry Point Open; register for the snow golf tournament by calling 450-458-6699.

St. Lazare’s Snow Fest starts tomorrow till Feb. 7 and features various events, including a teen dance tomorrow, outdoor fun at Bédard Park, including ski-doo rides, skating, buggy rides, snowshoe races and demonstrations, a torchlight parade and fireworks and bonfire. A sugar shack brunch takes place Jan. 31 as well as the Cercle des Fermières’ arts, crafts  and bake sale and a Snow Fest mass. Other events include a blood donor clinic Feb. 1, a bridge tournament Feb. 2, a mixed volleyball tournament Feb. 3 and a tournament evening on Feb. 4. Family activities at the Base de plein air Les Cèdres are planned Feb. 6 and 7, with rides, cross-country skiing, maple taffy on snow, sports demonstrations, hot wine, musical comedy for kids and an ice-carving workshop, ethnic dancing, daytime skating as well as torch skating and a show of fire-eaters. Pincourt’s Winterfest takes place Jan. 30, from noon to 4 p.m., at Olympic Park. Activities include dog-sled rides for children, skating, snow scooters, foot hockey games, a Scouts winter camp, kites, ice fishing, sleigh rides, Nordic walking, inflatable games, ice sculpting, cross-country skiing and taffy on snow. Dorval celebrates winter from Feb. 10 to 14 with many activities, including square dancing, a skate fest, children’s theatre, a supper and comedy night, husky dog sled rides, astronomy and much more, including Tim Bits outdoor hockey, professional ice sculpting, high flying stunts, horse-drawn sleigh rides, a children’s slide, snowmobile tours, recreational skating, campfire, a figure skating show.

Île Perrot’s Winterfun takes place Feb. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Michel-Martin Park with a mini sugar shack, sleigh rides, kicksleds, a kids’ corner, skating and open hockey, a golf tournament, treats and activities for children and teens and adults. For more information, call 514-453-1751, ext. 227.
