It seemed exciting when Geneviève Guimond was accepted into the music program at the Université de Montréal at age 16.
But now, the Pointe Claire teenager and accomplished cellist has really hit the big time in the world of music –
acceptance at the prestigious Julliard School in New York City.
The performing arts conservatory is where dreams are made and Guimond, 18, is dreaming about a career in music that encompasses being a soloist or maybe doing music for movies.
Whichever way she goes, it seems there’s no stopping her. U de M was a big deal, but Julliard is even bigger. Only eight per cent of applicants are accepted at the school, which is considered even tougher than Harvard to get in to.
“Julliard wasn’t even my first choice,” said Guimond, who leaves for New York at the end this month. “I thought I wanted to go to Michigan. But when I visited Julliard, I was completely wowed by the school and the people there.”
Prior to this accomplishment, Guimond was a student at Lindsay Place High School in Pointe Claire with an interest in the cello. She’s been playing since the age of 5 and has studied with a professor from the U of M since the age of 10.
“I’m a little nervous about going to Julliard, but also really excited,” Guimond said. “I was really impressed with the calibre of the students at Julliard. So I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
