It would probably be a safe bet to say that not many people knew that a bronze bust of Lawrence Alexander Wilson existed in Coteau du Lac.
In fact, it might also be safe to assume that not many people knew Wilson, a wholesale liquor merchant, was the Liberal MP for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges riding from 1925-1930 and a senator from 1930 until 1934, when he died at age 70.
One thing is for sure, however, is that someone took the bronze bust from Wilson Park some time during the night of Aug. 4 to 5.
“It was just taken from the pedestal,” said Sûreté du Québec Det. Mario Vernier.
The age, size and weight of the bust was not known. Town officials could not be reached for comment.
In the past few years, thefts of historic artifacts, including plaques of names of war veterans from Legion cenotaphs as well as church bells, have been reported in Montreal and the Eastern Townships. Police believed the thefts are due to the high price of metal.
Anyone with information on the latest theft is asked to call Det. Mario Vernier at 450-456-3883.
