North Shore Lions win QBFL championship with exciting 17-8 victory over St. Leonard

posted by nslions at 17h24

The North Shore Lions have won the QBFL Championship for 2008 in an exciting 17-8 edge-of-your-seat victory over St. Leonard.

The game was filled with excitement and drama as it was either team's game to be won up until the end of the fourth quarter.
The Lions realized quite quickly that they were clearly facing a team that had done its homework and was ready to give them a fight worthy of a championship game as the Cougars went into halftime with an 8-7 advantage.

The second half was also a hard fought battle between the two teams until Andrew Hopkins (19 carries for 163 yards) broke free for 85 yards down the sideline for his second TD of the game, which sealed St. Leonard's fate from that point on. Shawn Steen later added a field goal to go along with his two converts to ensure the win for North Shore.

Also turning in a strong game for the offence was Ernst Pierre with 15 carries for 63 yards, along with receivers Chris Cione, Jordan Tyrell and Kyeon Nicely, who each came up with a reception.

Although the Cougars mounted an impressive running game against the Lions defence, North Shore's "Big D" managed to come up big when it counted most, as they stopped St. Leonard on at least 3 goal-line stands deep in their own end.

Leading the defence was Dimitri Divolis with 10 tackles. Thomas Quinn registered 9 tackles and an interception, while Shawn Steen got 8 tackles and an interception as well. Killian Moore came up with an interception of his own and a total of 6 QB sacks were shared amongst Trevor Cernivz, whose efforts earned him the defensive game MVP award, Kadeem Nurse, Glody Bomolo, Kyle McGuigan, Francis Chiquette, Dimitri Divolis and Kasey Fukunaga.
